Choosing a Dubrovnik neighbourhood

Old Town (within the walls)

Inside the medieval walls — no cars, marble streets, and stairs everywhere. Unbeatable atmosphere, but every arrival ends on foot.

Ploče

The cliffside strip east of the Old Town — the city's five-star row, with the best Old Town views and a 5–12 minute walk to Stradun.

Pile & Boninovo

The western gateway to the Old Town — walkable, well served by buses, and closer to the ferry port than Ploče.

Lapad

The green residential peninsula with a pedestrian promenade, a swimmable bay and far better value than the Old Town — 10 minutes by bus to Pile.

Babin Kuk

The resort headland at the tip of Lapad — big hotels, pools, shallow beaches and the flattest walking terrain in Dubrovnik. Ideal for families.

Gruž

The working harbour: cruise terminal, ferry port, main bus station and the city's best market. Practical rather than pretty — but unbeatable for early ferries and cruise turnarounds.

Montovjerna

A quiet hillside neighbourhood between Lapad and the Old Town — good value, but steep walks in both directions.

Župa Dubrovačka (Srebreno & Mlini)

A calm seaside bay 15 minutes south of the city, halfway to the airport. Cheaper, greener and family-friendly with a flat coastal promenade.

Cavtat

A postcard fishing town 10 minutes from the airport, with a palm-lined promenade and a seasonal boat straight to the Old Town.

Orašac, Trsteno & the Riviera

The coastal strip north-west of the city — resort hotels with private beaches, quiet nights, and a car or transfer strongly recommended.

Hotel questions we get asked every week

Where is the best area to stay in Dubrovnik?

Stay in the Old Town for atmosphere (but expect stairs and no car access), Ploče for five-star views a few minutes from Stradun, Lapad or Babin Kuk for beaches, pools and better value with families, and Gruž if you have an early ferry or a cruise. Župa Dubrovačka and Cavtat are cheaper and much closer to the airport.

How far are Dubrovnik hotels from the airport?

City hotels are 21–25 km from Dubrovnik Airport (Čilipi), roughly 27–35 minutes by car. Cavtat is only 7–8 km (10 minutes) and Župa Dubrovačka around 13 km (17 minutes).

Can a taxi drop me at my hotel in the Old Town?

No. Vehicles cannot enter the walled city. Taxis and transfers stop at Pile Gate or Ploče Gate, and you walk the rest — often over marble streets and steps. Check our Stairs & Luggage Check before booking an Old Town hotel.

Which Dubrovnik hotels are best for families?

Babin Kuk and Lapad hotels such as Valamar Lacroma, Valamar Argosy, Hotel Kompas and Hotel Dubrovnik Palace offer pools, kids' facilities, shallow beaches and flat walking terrain. The Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera in Srebreno is also strong for families.

Do Dubrovnik hotels have parking?

Most hotels outside the walls have paid parking; free parking is rare (Hotel More, Hotel Berkeley and Sun Gardens are exceptions). No hotel inside the Old Town has parking — the nearest garages are Ilijina Glavica and Gruž.

How far are Dubrovnik hotels from the cruise port?

The cruise terminal is in Gruž. Gruž hotels are 2–5 minutes away, Lapad and Babin Kuk 9–10 minutes, Ploče and the Old Town 11–14 minutes by car.

Arriving? We'll take you door to door.

Private airport transfers, cruise-port pick-ups and luggage help to hotels the taxis can't reach.
