How busy the Old Town feels on any given day is decided by the cruise calendar, not the season.
Short answer
A quiet day means 0–1 ships; a busy day brings 4–6 ships and 12,000+ visitors concentrated between 10:00 and 14:00. Check the Port Authority's live cruise calls list, then visit the Old Town before 09:00, between 13:30 and 15:30, or after 18:00.
Reading the schedule
The official live schedule is published by the Dubrovnik Port Authority at portdubrovnik.hr — it lists which ships are in port, at what time and how many guests they carry.
Ships dock at Gruž, not the Old Port. Passengers shuttle to Pile Gate, so the crowd hits the western half of the Old Town first.
The quiet hours
Before 09:00
Passengers are still disembarking. Best light, empty Stradun, locals having coffee.
13:30 – 15:30
Groups head back for lunch and on-board time. The city breathes again.
After 18:00
Most ships sail by early evening. Golden hour and dinner service.
Crowd-avoidance tactics
Walk the City Walls at opening or last entry — anything in between on a cruise day means heat and queues.
Enter through Ploče Gate rather than Pile; almost everyone arrives at Pile.
On five-ship days, take a boat to the Elaphiti Islands or drive up the coast, and come back for dinner.
