Old Town gates.
There are four ways into the walled city, and choosing the right one saves you twenty minutes of queueing and a lot of stairs.
Short answer
Pile Gate is the main western entrance and the busiest. Ploče Gate on the east is calmer and closest to the Old Port and Banje beach. Buža Gate is a small stepped side entrance. The Ponta / Old Port gate is the flattest way in from the harbour side.
The four gates
Pile Gate (west)
The postcard entrance and the main bus hub. Where every tour group, cruise shuttle and taxi arrives. Nearest to the City Walls main ticket office and Onofrio's Fountain.
Ploče Gate (east)
Calmer year-round. Closest to Banje beach, the Old Port, the Dominican Monastery and the eastern walls entrance. Best drop-off point on busy days.
Buža Gate (north)
A small stepped gate on the northern side, reached from the Jesuit stairs area. Quiet, but stairs both sides — not for luggage.
Ponta / Old Port gate (south-east)
The flat way in from the harbour. Useful if you arrive by small boat or return from Lokrum.
Choosing the right gate
Staying on the north side (Prijeko, Boškovićeva, Zamanjina)? Enter at Pile and count on stairs whichever way you go.
Staying on the south side (Od Puča, Široka, Ilije Sarake)? Ploče or the Old Port gate is flatter and shorter.
On four-ship cruise days, avoid Pile entirely between 10:00 and 14:00 — Ploče stays walkable.
Rules at the gates
No wheeled luggage
Dragging a suitcase on Stradun carries a fine of up to €265. Use luggage storage at Gruž or the main bus station.
No swimwear in the streets
Cover up between the sea and your accommodation — this is enforced.
Vehicles
Cars cannot enter through any gate. Drop-off happens outside, at the ZOPR boundary.
